TWC 908, The Certificate in Professional Technical Communication is designed to help those with no prior experience and existing writers work within a range of styles specific to the field of technical writing. The Advanced Certificate Program uses a comprehensive text as well as an instructional web site to bring together resources, exercises, activities, assignments, quizzes and deliverables that are geared exclusively towards the art and craft of technical writing. In 2000, Dr. John E. Reid Jr. made professional contact with Dr. Kenneth Rainey. Dr Rainey was a fellow for the Society of Technical Communication and also a Professor of Humanities and Technical Communication at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia. He was teaching technical writing, document design, graphics, multimedia, technical writing and editing, and conducting research in the field of technical communication. Dr. Reid proposed a venture in which both would collaborate to develop online courses and certificate programs specific to meeting the needs of those in business and industry and individuals seeking new career options.

Dr. Reid's knowledge and expertise in Adult Education and Distance Education along with his colleagues background in Technical Writing led to the initial seminal and ground breaking work.
